Synapse Dance Theatre

A 1980s Boston dance troupe

Artistic Director, Bart McCarthy

The original idea was to take the dance form called Contact Improvisation and give it theatrical structures to create a unique form of theatre. Within loose or tight frameworks designed by Bart McCarthy (with a little actual choreography and/or straight theatre moments thrown in), Synapse performed for new England audiences between 1981 and 1990. Winner of the Massachusetts Artists Foundation Fellowship and other awards.

Take a trip down memory lane and enjoy this unique form of theatre and dance. Note: as you might expect, video from the 1980s is pretty lousy. Sorry about that. We never had a resident videographer.
